How to file kra nil returns

In Kenya if you have a KRA pin number, then it is mandatory to file your tax returns annually.The same case also applies to students and people who are supposed to file nil return or else you will pay a fine.

In April 2018, KRA introduced new rules in order to lower cases of people who have been evading tax by filling Nil Returns.

According to the new rule, anyone who wants to file Nil Returns needs to declare that they are either unemployed and don’t have any other source of generating income through their online iTax portal.

Below is a comprehensive guide on how to file Nil Returns so as to avoid being fined by the taxman.

1. Open your browser on PC or laptop and click https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal
2. Enter your PIN/User ID (KRA PIN).
3. Click the continue button and enter your password.
4. Answer the security question in order to access your iTax profile and file nil return.
5. In order to file Nil Return, click on the Returns menu and select this option “File Nil Return”.
6. From the drop down menu Under Tax Obligation, click on Value Added Tax – VAT or Income Tax PAYE.
7. Key in the return period and click submit option.
8. An e-Return Acknowledgement receipt will be automatically generated by the system.
9. After that hit the “Download” button to download the e-Return Acknowledge slip for your own records.
